MEET THE CAST OF THE MYTHIC SERIES

LUCY KNIGHT - THE HEROINE

When we first meet fifteen-year-old Lucia Knight she is sneaking out of her bedroom window to spray-paint offensive graffiti about her nemesis, the principal of Hearth High. Or in other words, an average Tuesday night for Miss Knight. She lives in a small New Zealand town with her deadbeat father, who has never recovered from losing his wife, Lucy’s mother, to a house fire over a decade before. Lucy is an angry, miserable, unremarkable, plus-sized teenager who hates just about everything and everyone apart from her friend Amber, who she instead just tolerates.

She is exactly the type of person who shouldn’t be the guardian of an otherworldly evil that has been carved into five pieces and imprisoned in our world. Unfortunately for us, that’s exactly who she is. Lucy learns she is the Mythic – the only being in two worlds who can resist that evil, known as The Dark.

When someone tries to free one of the five pieces it is only she who has the power to stop them. But worse, Lucy learns that her mentor, the one person who can explain her abilities and mission, is nowhere to be found. Instead, aided by Amber and two new friends, Lucy will embark on a physical and emotional quest that takes her to another world – literally. And that fantasy world is about to get a big dose of reality.

Lucy will need to find the heroine within in order to save us all. But that’s assuming there is a heroine underneath all that anger and misery. As she herself would say, “we are royally f@#ked”.

AMBER KIM - THE BEST FRIEND

Every great lead character needs a great side-kick, however Amber Kim considers herself interesting enough to helm her own adventures. But until she gets that chance she’ll happily hitch a ride on Lucy’s story.

Unlike Lucy, Amber is an expert in fantasy quests and her favourite hero is the titular character of the Sebastian Grieve series, a vampire-wizard boy detective. She thinks that ought to prepare her for the challenges that lie ahead. It will not.

Like Lucy, Amber is an outsider, with a solo mother who can barely speak English, and taunted by the racist teens at school who constantly deride her for being Chinese. They don’t they know that Kim is a Korean name and worse, they don’t care.

Amber is optimistic, kind, and, along with being a bookworm, is a self-identifying genius who carries a hockey stick everywhere because she thinks it will help her master at least one form of physical activity. It will not.

Amber is also a self-identifying phobic with innumerable fears of everything from heights to clowns to spiders.

Unfortunately, Lucy is about to drag her into an adventure that involves heights, clowns, spiders, and much, much more.

All of Amber’s study has prepared her intellectually for what’s coming up – but it turns out real life is far more challenging than fiction.

HENRY - THE MINOTAUR WARRIOR

Henry is a hybrid man-bull with blue fur and a tendency not to bathe. It’s not his fault – he’s an outcast in his home world, left for dead at birth in a labyrinth and then hunted for sport by heroes on their “quests”. Since then he’s faced a lifetime of ridicule, judgement, isolation, and scorn.

He is not pleased when Lucy comes crashing into his home, and that’s not a figure of speech – she literally crashes into his home! Lucy may have just met the only being angrier, meaner, and more stubborn than herself.

Unfortunately, Henry might be her only chance to survive when she finds herself alone in the dangerous and unfamiliar fantasy world of Aedea.

Fortunately, this “beast” is more human than his appearance and manner would suggest. And if he doesn’t kill Lucy, he might just be the key to helping her save the day and the world.

BIG BEAR - THE CAT

Big Bear needs no introduction and if you haven’t heard of him already then that’s your fault because he is legendary – especially in his own mind.

He is a talking cat, which isn’t remarkable in itself, but when Big Bear talks he expects everyone to listen. This roguishly charming feline will steal your heart, your dinner, and your silver if you have any. He’ll actually accept any precious metal as payment for his assistance, but silver best complements his black and white fur.

Big Bear has more secrets than he has witty retorts – and he has thousands of witty retorts. He is also prone to bursting out in French, but that’s because the French language is stolen from his native Cat-lish. Don’t worry, he’s keeping a list of exactly what we stole from him. The papers filing his lawsuits will be forthcoming!

Big Bear will be your favourite character from The Mythic Series, whether you like it or not. But you’ll like it. He’s that charming!
